For much of the 20th century, Romania held the No. 2 position in the world for the export of petroleum drilling-production equipment. After the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), however, much of the existing industrial markets in Eastern Europe collapsed and were followed by a general economic downturn. This trend was no different in Romania, including in its chief oil industry city of Ploiesti.
